What is the Philmont Packing Goal?
The GOAL FOR A COMPLETE PHILMONT KIT is to keep your total base weight as close to 20lbs as possible. Base weight is everything you intend to carry that does not include 1. Clothes you will generally wear on trail, 2. Water weight (2.2lb/liter), 3. Food Weight, and 4. Share of crew gear. Choosing gear wisely is incredibly important and it is STRONGLY encouraged to weight every item you intend to carry and utilize a lighter pack page to estimate your total weight. Going lightweight does not have to be very expensive, but finding good weight/cost value should be prioritized for the big 3 (Sleep system, Shelter system, and Pack system).
The average personal backpacking kit base weight = 20-25 lbs
The average worn gear = 4-6 lbs
The average water carry/person (3 liters) = 6.6 lbs
The average food carry/person = 2-4 lbs
The average crew gear share/person = 2-3 lbs
The average total carry = 34.6 – 44.6
