HOW TO: Steps to Becoming a Merit Badge Counselor

1. REGISTER: Register as an adult leader with Troop 395 – APPLY NOW (if not already completed) OR there is a $25 registration fee for signing up as a merit badge counselor only. MC Counselor Fee is included with troop registration.
   
   
2. REVIEW MERIT BADGES: Review the merit badge list and badge requirements. Determine which badges you believe you would be qualified to counsel. You do not have to be an expert in the subject, but you should have the insight and resources available to you to effectively assist a scout in the completion of that merit badge.

   *Merit Badge Pamphlets can be found in the 395 Digital Library (pass “395”)
   
   
3. SYT TRAINING: Complete the Safeguarding Youth Training (if not already completed)
   Certificate Required to be Attached to Application
   
   
4. MERIT BADGE COUNSELOR TRAINING: Take Merit Badge Counselor Training (if not already completed)
   Application Requires Training Date
   • Log in to my.scouting.org
   • Navigate to “My training”
   • Navigate to “Merit Badge Counselor Training” (34 Minutes)
     complete: SCO742 (Aims and methods of scouts BSA), SCO747 (Introduction to merit badges), SCO486 (What is a Merit Badge Counselor), SCO471 (Advancement)
     
     
5. MB INFO FORM: Complete the MB Counselor Information form linked below.

   * Want to sign up for more than 8 merit badges as a counselor? Download the overflow form to add to your application.
   
   
6. MBC ADULT APPLICATION: Complete the MB Counselor Adult Application form linked below:

7. Email the following to the Troop Committee Chair and/or Scoutmaster.
   1. Safeguarding youth training certificate
   2. Merit badge training completion verification
   3. Merit badge counselor information form
   4. Overflow merit badge list (if applicable)
   5. Merit badge counselor adult application
      
      
8. Application sent to district to seek Michigan Crossroads Council for approval
